SAVAGE REPUBLIC - Aegean
2LP
Latest SAVAGE REPUBLIC’ album. “Aegean”is the counterpart of the same-titled CD released in 2014 on Mobilization, the label of the band. Current line-up includes founders Ethan Port and Thom Fuhrmann plus longtime member Alan Waddington (drums) and newer one Kerry Dowling on guitars and bass, plus guests including Blaine Reiniger/Tuxedomoon on violin and other ones on oud, doumbeck; trumpet or trombone...
“You want your breath taken away? Los.Angeles’s Savage Republic have been doing that since Hinckley Jr. shot Reagan, but Aegean is like Mount McKinley compared to Mount Rainier—extra majestic. Mostly-instrumental music this polar beautiful and often awe-striking is rarely so harsh below its exquisite exterior, but Kerry Dowling’s dirty bass (sometimes Stranglers-esque) and Alan Waddington’s tribal thwack is base camp underneath Thom Fuhrmann (and on four songs, Ethan Port’s) alpine, Eastern, Middle Eastern, Greek, or spaghetti western guitars. And intermittent chanted vocals add aggression that is anything but passive—contrasting some sweet Stella P female cooing, too. They’re still our answer to Wire’s 154 taken to cinematic extremes, and wrapping your head around the glorious, lovely cacophony of “El Porto”—one gem out of 19, on this amazingly consistent, two-hour Cecil B. DeMille epic!!—is to be transported into sensations of hang-gliding around such snowy peaks. Just… plain… fabulous!”
